Mixed Blood by Tiffany Wernik

Artist Statement: The basis of this piece was the idea of needing to choose a side when you’re mixed. I spent a lot of time putting on my “white mask” to avoid my Chinese heritage. I remember trying as hard as I could to push down my culture so I could be palatable to the pretty white girls I hung out with. Now I’ve realized that being mixed is quite literally in my blood and whenever I look in the mirror I see that. The text carved into my chest says “Mixed Blood” in mandarin characters while the mask has “white person” written on it.
