Dear Humanity

A poem/rant by Isabel Escobar

Dear Humanity,

Please stop telling me to straighten my hair.

Dear Humanity,

Please stop asking me why my skin is so pale.

Dear Humanity,

Please just leave me alone Humanity.

Dear Humanity,

Please stop telling me that I’m not enough for you but I’m also too much for you, because I’m so confused and it feels like there is nowhere I belong to and no place I have a right to exist in.

Dear Humanity,

Please stop choking me.

Dear Humanity,

Fuck you.

Dear Humanity,

Why?

Dear Humanity,

No, it’s not okay. I’m sorry you didn’t know, but it is not my job to teach you. I’m sorry that your ignorance is no longer a good enough excuse.

Dear Humanity,

Yes, I really do count as my ethnic identity and yes, I really do consider myself from and a part of the country that I was born and raised in.

Dear Humanity,

I am learning that I am worth more than what you told me. The scars you left me still burn sometimes but I am trying to make them hurt less. I am trying to love myself. I am trying to accept myself. I am trying to see myself as beautiful. I am trying to discover myself. I am trying to find all the things that you buried away deep within me. I am trying to undo the damage you caused me.

I am trying.......so hard.
