Mixed Musician Spotlight: Songs By Safiyah Hernandez

Safiyah Hernandez is a young Mexican, Pakistani, Irish, Italian, and Indian Bay Area songwriter and musician. We asked her to choose her strongest song and elaborate on why.

“If I had to choose my strongest song, I would choose Mars, as it is timely. This song emanates how many in my generation feel about having to live (or die) on Earth in its current environmental condition. I feel very strongly about this issue and wrote this song to express my deepest feelings about it. I hope this song can unite those who feel the same about this issue and influence those that may not. Many youth are working towards the goal of changing how we treat our environment and I hope this song can encourage change.”

Everyone should also listen to Untouchable, a song that touches on issues of race, sexism, and police brutality.

Finally, I wanted to send one more song that is about beauty standards and how they affect young people. This song is titled SKIN DEEP and is currently in production.
